In 1996, Rosie Schurz founded Rosie’s House Musical Academy for Children in a two-bedroom house in an impoverished Phoenix neighborhood. Schurz, a German immigrant, was forced to evacuate her family home during World War II, leaving her violin behind. That experience led her to start Rosie’s House, a program that provides musical instruction for underserved children. We recently talked with Marvin Scott, a former saxophone teacher at the original Rosie’s House, who now serves as...

Cross the secular December holiday Festivus – introduced to the popular consciousness in a 1997 Seinfeld episode – with Phoenix and you have Phoestivus, a wintertime market celebrating its 13th year in the Valley of the Sun. Like its namesake, Phoestivus offers an “airing of the grievances” and a Festivus pole, but our Phoenician fest also boasts local vendors (200 last year), art, crafts, food, beverages, Hipster Santa Claus and Phoestivus mascot Phreddie the Yeti....

Photo by Aimee Smith Usually, when someone tells us to “smile” it causes us to roll our eyes, at best. But while viewing this mural by “Just” Giovannie, located on the back wall of the Cambria Downtown Phoenix, we can’t help but break out in a grin. By the time we read the “Smile” prompt in the conversation bubble, we already are.   Photo by Aimee Smith This smiling face is the gatekeeper to an alley...

Upon walking into Ghost Donkey, a new cocktail concept in the heart of Roosevelt Row, you’ll first notice the twinkling ceiling lights and the crowd gathered around the bar. The bar is warm and welcoming, bathed in pink neon lights. Under the color-changing lights, you’ll notice funky décor, including a life-size donkey statue wearing a sombrero, that transports you to a summertime fiesta in Mexico. On weekends, Ghost Donkey and its sister establishments (Cham Pang...

Photo by Aimee Smith This colorful wall located on the side of Majerle’s Sports Grill was painted by Jake Early and Quinn Murphy. It can be seen while traveling south on Second Street, just past the convention center parking garage. A bright sun is the main focal point, but upon closer inspection, mountains and the Downtown Phoenix skyline appear. The title of the mural, “It’s Another Beautiful Day in Downtown Phoenix”, is a tribute to,...

The artist known as The Lady Egg recently left a smattering of paintings on Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix. This pop of yellow adorns the 10-O-One Building, just down from Bunky Boutique. Another Lady Egg creation stands guard at the exit to the parking garage around the corner. This 3-D bespectacled fellow is captured in free fall, about to tumble into the dumpsters behind Pedal Haus. A distinguished egghead reads the paper behind the bike racks...

The Garfield Phoenix exterior | Photo courtesy instagram.com/the_garfield_phx After some hard work and elbow grease, the historical Garfield Phoenix diner has reopened under new ownership. If you’ve passed by the small storefront on Roosevelt and 10th streets, you’ve probably read the offerings painted on the diner’s façade: “Coffee, Ice Cream and Tacos.” However, this little spot is crafting a lot more than meets the eye, with even bigger things to come. The soft glow of...
