Business partners Laurie Guidi and Ron Jones have known each other their whole lives – literally. The twin siblings joke they’re so inseparable that it was inevitable they’d start a business together. In March 2019, they joined forces with their spouses, Chris Guidi and Salina Jones, to open Candle Chemistry, a Scottsdale Quarter shop where you can purchase body products, home goods or candles with aromas like Cactus Flower, Sage & Saguaro and Salted Tequila....

When Kurt Riske and his business partners purchased Los Sombreros in 2017, staying true to the restaurant’s Central Mexico origins (original co-founder/chef Azucena Tovar hails from the region) was paramount. So they visited last fall for menu and design inspiration. Struck by the beauty of a San Miguel de Allende church, “we had an artist paint the mural of [it] at our Scottsdale location, and then we did a wrap of it on a patio...

Several Valley utilities providers have extended disconnection moratoriums in the wake of COVID-19. Power Arizona Public Service (APS) is extending its hold through the end of 2020 for residential and business customers and will waive late fees. Salt River Project (SRP) is extending its moratorium through early January for its Economy Price Plan. Water Phoenix Water Services is continuing its moratorium on shut-offs. Late payments lead to a switch to “low-flow” accounts. Gas Southwest Gas...

Trying new restaurants is a big part of my life – for work and for personal pleasure. This year, though, I’ve made an effort to patronize (via takeout; I’m still quarantining) restaurants that are older, but new to me. I’ve especially made a point to try beloved Valley institutions I’d somehow missed in my dining adventures. Now I know that I, too, love Los Sombreros and Rusconi’s American Kitchen!   This time I thought I’d finally try Roaring Fork and its wood-fired Southwestern cuisine, made famous by former chef/owner Robert McGrath. When I was 12, I started religiously reading The Arizona Republic’s...

There’s an undeniable heaviness to retired teacher Gaila Kline-Hobson’s debut novel, The Chosen’s Calling (self-published; available on Amazon for $9.95 in paperback and $3.99 as an e-book). Her inspiration was one of life’s most unanswerable questions: Why do young people die? But rather than dwelling on tragedy, she instead imagines a world where death is a transition for youths to fulfill bigger destinies in the afterlife. Her spiritual fantasy novel centers on three teens from...

It’s official: Everyone loves Danzeisen Dairy. After nabbing partnerships with every local major sports team, Laveen’s multigenerational dairy farm-turned-haute-milk peddler has teamed up with Valley-based shock rocker Alice Cooper on limited-edition leche. Danzeisen’s signature glass bottles – charming throwbacks to the milk delivery services of yesteryear – will bear a portrait of Cooper in stage makeup. A portion of proceeds will benefit Solid Rock Teen Center, Cooper’s organization that serves underprivileged teens.

The resort formerly known as CopperWynd reopens this month as Adero Scottsdale after a $100 million investment by Palisades Resorts. “With endless desert terrain allowing for the possibility of year-round adventure, we wanted to create a place where flora and fauna, the local community and culture intersect with the guest experience through hands-on programming and superior service,” owner and developer Bill Hinz says. Look forward to: Stargazing: The property is Scottsdale’s first and only Dark...

One size doesn’t fit all, and one tone doesn’t fit all when it comes to “nude” bras and underwear. That’s why Phoenix-based costume designer Jessica McPhaul and her husband, Jay, created Naked Rebellion, a line of undergarments in hues that reflect the diversity of the women wearing them: almond, crème, honey, mocha, caramel, walnut, espresso, cappuccino and black. “Our sincere belief is that our product should be designed to benefit every woman on earth,” Jessica...
