Cosmetic Dentistry & TMD

Dental School: University of Southern California

Years in Practice: 20

Besides precision and efficiency, what are the most important traits a successful dentist should possess?
Be human, have compassion, be sincere and be understanding. Maintain currency and be professional at all times.

In addition to doing cosmetic dentistry, you also specialize in TMD, generally defined as jaw and face health. What inspired you to practice in this field?
It is for sure challenging… you’re dealing with sleep apnea patients, snoring, pain management, headaches, trigeminal neuralgia and so many other cases that patients have difficulty finding someone to treat. But I like the challenge.

You served as an assistant professor at your alma mater, the University of Southern California. What is one piece of advice you give to your dental students?
Put your patient above anything else. The patient is why you chose your profession. Make them your focal point, and all else will fall into place.

Do have a partnership with Invisalign? You have the logo on your website.
Yes, I’m a “gold plus” Invisalign provider. It’s a clear aligner that uses invisible clear trays to move teeth. It is usually less intrusive and more comfortable [than traditional orthodontia]. Most of my patients love it because they lose weight as they cut down on snacks in between meals.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I’m devoted to my family, both close and extended. I enjoy helping others through my work as an honorary consul for the nation of Lebanon, [which means I help] immigrants who come to the U.S. and who need assistance with all aspects of living in a new country.

What’s the best depiction of a dentist or dentistry you’ve seen in the movies or on TV?
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The father recognizes his son after looking at his teeth. For many of my patients, even though it may sound weird, that is how I remember them.

What’s the funniest thing a patient has ever said to you while on nitrous oxide?
“Let’s go clubbing.”

“If I wasn’t a dentist, I’d be…”
Perhaps a top-notch lawyer! My wife thinks I am great at arguing. Or an entrepreneur creating opportunities for the less fortunate and the needy.
