What is the most common specific ailment a periodontist typically treats?
We treat anything related to the supporting structures in the mouth – specifically the alveolar bone and gingival tissues, or gums. This can be the treatment and eradication of disease, the placement of implants, hard tissue grafting, soft tissue grafting, biopsies and reconstructive procedures.
You frequently utilize platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) during your procedures. What is it and why is it preferred?
PRF is basically a clot. When we spin blood in a specifically designed centrifuge, we get two distinct layers, a red blood cell layer and a fibrin layer. The fibrin, or clot, layer is separated off and… packed with growth factors which are polypeptides or proteins that play a key role in the regulation of physiological processes. In basic terms, [it aids] in stimulating blood flow to a particular area. I use PRF when I’m reconstructing bone, in certain soft tissue grafting procedures as well as with sinus lifts and block grafts.
How does 3D imaging enhance periodontic diagnosis and treatment?
[It allows me] to image vital structures like the maxillary sinus and certain nerve bundles with detail and precision… I use this type of imaging on almost every patient I see as it gives me peace of mind.
You conducted a first-of-its-kind study on the correlation between estrogen and alveolar bone density changes in postmenopausal women. Can you tell us more about your research?
In my three-year longitudinal study, I found that, statistically, women with deficient amounts of blood estrogen showed increased loss of bone density in the upper and lower jaws. Clinically, however, this bone density change due to estrogen deficiency was not great enough to really make a big difference. Other factors such as smoking, certain bacterial strains and cellular processes played a more significant role.
You grew up in New England and lived in New Jersey for many years! Which regional dishes do you miss the most? What’s your favorite place in the Valley to satisfy those cravings?
Probably a great New England lobster roll. So, when I have the desire, Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls at the Scottsdale Quarter is amazing. The owner is a Maine native and his food is legit!
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love to go on a long run or hit the gym. I also enjoy movies and reading. Downtime is really appreciated!
What is the funniest thing a patient has said to you on nitrous oxide?
I am not sure about nitrous, but I had a 65-year-old patient who was orally sedated asked me to the prom. Of course, I said yes!
“If I wasn’t a dentist, I’d be…”
Either a sports agent or a hedge fund manager.
