What got you interested in periodontics?
While in dental school, my focus was drawn to saving people’s teeth. The first time I removed a patient’s entire dentition due to gum disease and inserted full dentures, I thought there must be a better way to prevent this from happening. Periodontics is the specialty devoted to this quest of preventing, treating and arresting gum disease. Although it’s not the most glamorous discipline in dentistry, for me it has been the most rewarding.

Why is the LANAP laser such an important development?
It allows me to treat patients that were otherwise avoiding advanced surgical periodontal care. It is less invasive and is a very effective first line of micro-surgical treatment of gum disease. Periodontics has many surgically successful and invasive treatments; however, I rely on LANAP to initially address all of my patient’s conditions.

What’s the most complicated dental case you’ve ever encountered?
One of my most challenging cases is a patient that has been with me for over 15 years. She came to me when she was 10 years old. She was diagnosed with a condition that did not develop many of her adult teeth and did not allow full maturation of many of the remaining teeth. I had to co-manage the case with an orthodontist and a general dentist to develop an ideal plan intended on moving teeth, surgically placing implants and ultimately building her a beautiful smile that we’re all very proud of.

You graduated from The Ohio State University. What was your favorite part of living in the Buckeye State?
The beautiful autumn season. I miss the changing of the leaves when the days were warm and dry and the nights were cool. This was the time of year I enjoyed fly fishing for steelhead trout in the tributaries of Lake Erie. It was also the time the Buckeye nation would come together to celebrate the football season.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I have two passions in my life: my family and my personal love of fly fishing. My family always comes first. I love the time I spend with my beautiful wife of 23 years and our three children. We have been blessed with many beautiful chapters in our lives together thus far.

You were an associate professor for several years. Do you miss anything about molding young minds?
Teaching and giving back to the future of my profession is essential, and I consider it to be a privilege. For me it is a time to connect with minds eager to learn. I have always loved the learning process, but I also love to pass on my knowledge so others can also excel. Ultimately the best part of mentoring is knowing that what I pass on will help future patients receive the best possible care from their future doctors.

“If I wasn’t a dentist, I’d be…”
In the real world, I would probably be a plastic surgeon. In my fantasy world, I’m an exclusive guide for destination fly-fishing adventures around the world.
