Classic Arizona steakhouse to welcome diners again starting December 17.

Like many who’ve spent 75 years in the desert sun, iconic Phoenix steakhouse Durant’s was in need of a facelift.

Closed since February and now in the hands of new ownership, the classic Arizona restaurant is ready to reopen after months of restoration and modern kitchen upgrades.

“We tried to refresh the place and give more offerings food-wise,” says Marc Lupino, chief culinary officer for Durant’s. “My goal was to keep the dishes everyone wanted and expand it with more appetizers, sides and caviar service.”

Durant’s will open for dinner service on December 17 with enhanced touches to its classic menu, new cuts of steak, new desserts and sides – and that preserved-in-the-past lore that made it legendary.

“We tried to keep the mystique,” Lupino says.

Durant’s mystical aura now transfers to its new owners, brothers Jeff and Mike Mastro of  Prime Steak Concepts, the brain trust behind Steak 44, Ocean 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse. Maintaining Durant’s unique flavor – both on and off the table – was their priority.

“This was really more of a restoration than a remodel,” Jeff Mastro said in a press release. “We think everyone will be incredibly pleased that we preserved what was here and enhanced the restaurant. The look is every bit Durant’s, but with some upgrades that complement the legacy brand’s character, look and feel.”

What Didn’t Change

  • Diners will still enter through the back of the building and walk through the kitchen to get to the bar or dining room.
  • Red booths, red walls, porterhouse club plaques and neon signs still dominate the interior, while a fresh coat of pink paint was slapped on the exterior.
  • Yes, the new Durant’s will honor those famed tokens that get you a free dessert. If you know, you know.
