How we picked our Top Chiropractors
PHOENIX magazine generated its Top Chiropractors list via an online survey of practicing chiropractors in Greater Phoenix. Working with the Arizona Association of Chiropractic, PHOENIX launched an online voting portal in the fall and invited all practicing Valley chiropractors in good standing with the Arizona Board of Chiropractic Examiners to provide the names of three doctors whom they deem the best in their profession. At the conclusion of voting, we digitally tallied the votes. Once the top vote-getters were determined, our fact-checkers verified their information.
PHOENIX magazine does not give any preference to chiropractors who advertise. The list was determined solely on the votes we received, and our sales staff did not see the list until the chiropractors had been contacted and confirmed by our editorial fact-checkers. All providers on the list were cross-checked against the board’s online directory. Those with disciplinary actions within the last three years were removed from the list.

Your Scottsdale clinic is called Apple Chiropractic, but your name is actually pronounced Ap-PEL, with the accent on the second syllable. Was it mispronounced so often, you just had to lean into it?
Yes. Coming over from the old country [Germany], it was actually Apfel, which translates to “apple.” Also, I’m on the shorter side, so I was always called Little Apple as a kid.
What inspired you to pursue a chiropractic career?
When I was 22 years old, I fell off the Praying Monk on Camelback Mountain and hurt my back. At the time, surgery was my only option, but I ran into to a friend of mine who I knew from the Gold’s Gym from high school who had become a chiropractor. And he suggested to come see him. 30 days later, I was fine… surgery avoided! Having a kinesiology background, the next move, to become a chiropractor, became obvious to me.

You’ve been practicing chiropractic medicine in the Valley for more than 30 years. Are you an AZ native?
I’m a native New Yorker. My family moved here in 1967. To say I’ve seen drastic changes in this state is an understatement.
In addition to chiropractic care, you also administer shockwave therapy. What is that?
In 2014, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had to leave practice. Fortunately, I had Barrow on my side, and the brilliant Dr. Peter Nakaji saved me. About eight years later, my oldest son and I were doing Krav Maga martial arts and I hurt my shoulder. The surgeon suggested surgery for a supraspinatus tendon tear of the shoulder. I found a practitioner in the East Valley doing something I’ve never heard of: shockwave therapy. She said it would take about six visits to resolve [the injury]. After the six visits, I was back in the gym with full use of my shoulder. Once again, surgery [was] avoided. Two months later, Dr. Shockwave Rx was born.
You also founded the Whiplash Clinic in the Valley, catering to car accident victims. Anatomically speaking, what is whiplash, and how do you treat it?
Whiplash is a common injury after a car accident because the head is heavy, and the neck, ligaments, and discs and muscles are highly stressed at a very fast pace. In the beginning of my career, a part of my patient base were people dealing with post-traumatic trauma to the neck after car accident. I focused the majority of my continuing education on the treatment of this disease process.
What are the most common misconceptions about chiropractic medicine?
That back pain is coming from the back. In my practice, I find most of the issues are coming from the gluteus muscles that are pulling on that iliac crest that connects to the spine. In most cases, low back pain should be resolved in six treatments if properly diagnosed.
What do you do in your free time, outside the clinic?
I really enjoy the Arizona outdoors. You can usually find me on any one of the many hiking trails around the Valley.
“If I wasn’t a chiropractor, I’d be…”
If I wasn’t Dr. Shockwave Rx, I would be Batman!
