In 2020, retired law enforcement officer Brian Fernandez opened Yellow Spruce Roasters, a small café in Old Town Scottsdale where he serves coffee made with beans from his North Scottsdale roastery. Since then, he’s opened a bar next door. “We’re a coffee shop in the morning, and on the way home from work, [customers] can stop in for an espresso martini or glass of wine,” he says.

Fernandez spills on what he’ll be bringing to PHOENIX magazine’s Best of the Valley Party on Saturday, October 18. Purchase tickets here.

What will you be sampling at the BOV party?
We’re going to bring our Naonis, a sparkling rosé that we serve at our bar. It’s what we make all our mimosas with. And, we’ll be bringing some reds. We are also going to bring Breakfast Blend coffee.

What does it mean to your business to be a BOV winner?
First of all, I can say that we’re pleasantly surprised and we’re deeply honored. The recognition for our company means a lot, but also the exposure that it brings as well. We know that PHOENIX magazine is a very prominent magazine in the area, so we’re very happy to be a part of it.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy coffee?
I’m old fashioned. I like a regular drip coffee in the morning, but oftentimes when I’m traveling I do enjoy a cortado. It’s a mini latte, with 2 oz. of milk instead of 12 oz. of milk and a double shot of espresso.

What else would you like people to know about Yellow Spruce?
We are rooted in the community, founded by military and law enforcement officers and we just love to give back to the people who have supported us throughout the years. We’re growing. We have new locations coming soon.
