The challenges of multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers, known as myelin. This disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Symptoms of MS can vary widely from person to person, depending on the location and extent of nerve damage. Common symptoms include numbness, weakness, vision problems, mood changes, difficulty walking, fatigue and cognitive challenges. The 25-ton 7-Tesla MRI was installed at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix in late September last year, making Mayo Clinic the first center in Arizona to use it for patient care.

Thanks to its increased contrast and higher-resolution imaging than previous generations of MRIs, the 7-Tesla overcomes existing limitations, revealing details previously unseen.

“The 7-Tesla MRI enhances our ability to reliably detect signature brain lesion patterns that can distinguish multiple sclerosis from other disorders, improving both speed and accuracy of diagnosis,” says Dean Wingerchuk, M.D., a neurologist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

“We expect that the 7-Tesla MRI will be even more advantageous with upcoming changes to MS diagnostic criteria, which will rely more on advanced MRI techniques. This will allow us to reduce uncertainty for patients and ensure that they get the right treatment as early as possible.”

These advanced features enable earlier, more accurate diagnoses to guide treatment, revolutionizing patient care. They also support precision in surgical planning and are especially useful in understanding and addressing neurological conditions.
