Named for fantastical creatures of Oaxacan myth, Alebrijes – a pleasant, high-ceilinged space decorated with said critters – is beloved for brunch as well as for specialties from Oaxaca and Southern Mexico. From the brunch menu comes a hefty Mexican flag omelet stuffed with carnitas, corn and poblanos, its top smothered in red chile and green chile then drizzled with crema to depict the colors of the Mexican tricolor ($17). Alebrijes chilaquiles translates as a creamy, crunchy combo of corn chips; rich, chocolate-tinged black mole (red and green chile are also options); onions; sour cream; cotija and eggs ($21). It’s irresistible, but the best of the lot might be Alebrijes’ satisfying take on huevos rancheros – cheesy quesadillas blanketed with spice-perfumed chorizo, black beans, roasted jalapeño sauce and eggs, then garnished with avocado ($19).

Dry, stringy chicken ruins enchiladas suizas, blanketed in thin but flavorful salsa verde, which is traditionally richer and creamier ($18). Ornate coffee drinks like the mocha (gussied up with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate, $5.95) are part of the morning fun.

Wild Card: For your sweet tooth: Belgian waffle with lechera (condensed milk), whipped cream and berries; or sticky French toast with dulce de leche and plantains (both $14.50).
