We sifted through pages of legalese to uncover some of the more classically offbeat laws being considered by the Arizona Legislature this year.

House Bill 2042: Tamale Freedom

Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed a version of the so-called “tamale bill” last year, which would legalize the public sale of foods cooked in home kitchens. The new bill outlines a more detailed framework, including specific temperature and transportation requirements – and the explicit stipulation that these foods cannot contain marijuana.

Senate Bill 1570: Shrooms for All

Though it would be illegal to sell a weed-laced burrito, new legislation is moving through the state Capitol that would decriminalize the use of psilocybin – the psychedelic substance found in “magic mushrooms.” Despite any objective research or data, advocates say limited use may cure a multitude of diagnosed mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression and PTSD.

Senate Bill 1189: Gun Shows are People, Too

If approved, SB 1189 wouldn’t let anything come in the way of Arizonans getting their tickets to the gun show. Put simply, the bill would disallow local governments from prohibiting gun shows in cities and counties throughout the state. The bill has received backlash from firearm safety activists, who believe the legislation will exacerbate gun violence.
