While the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers battle it out in the 2023 World Series, another – and admittedly, far less interesting – drama is playing out in their respective home cities. And in true baseball fashion, it involves beer.
The editors of PHOENIX and D magazines have agreed to a friendly side wager tied to the series. If the Rangers win, PHOENIX editor Craig Outhier will ship a case of Arizona craft beer to his counterpart in Dallas, editor Tim Rogers. Or vice versa if the Diamondbacks win.
“Just our way of sweetening the pot, if you will, during what is sure to be an epic two weeks of baseball,” explains Outhier. “Its a special time in Phoenix, and possibly even more special in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area, which amazingly has never savored a Major League Baseball championship in the entire 62-year history of the team.”
The Diamondbacks won the 2001 World Series, just four years after the team’s founding.
In the unlikely scenario that PHOENIX magazine is obliged to make good on the bet, Outhier says he would have little problem picking out a winning assortment of Arizona craft beers – and would expect no less from Rogers.
“I just hope Tim doesn’t try to slip any Shiner in there.”
