Bettye LaVette Duo
It took a while for the world to catch up to Bettye LaVette. Despite having entered the music business in 1962 at the age of 16, she wasn’t widely recognized for her brilliant pop-music interpretive skills until the 2000s, when she covered Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann and Dolly Parton on I’ve Got My Own to Raise, an album featuring her renditions of hits by modern female artists. Zach Bryan
Zach Bryan may be filed under “Country” at your favorite record store, but the “Something in the Orange” singer probably has more in common with Bruce Springsteen than he does with his fellows in Nashville. His music is thoughtful and occasionally touches on the social issues of the day, a welcome contrast to the “bro-country” stars in Music City.
