The 1920s were marked by dramatic economic growth, prosperity, jazz music and the Prohibition – a period between the ’20s and ’30s when alcohol was outlawed in the United States. Underground speakeasies popped up across cities and the ‘20s roared on. Will 2020 be as remarkable as the Roaring ‘20s?
Rick Bronson hopes so. The comedian will open a speakeasy-style cocktail lounge and coffee bar this November. The unique concept will be located on High Street in northern Phoenix, an alluring area home to various retail shops and restaurants, including Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy.
The Stir will double as a coffeeshop and ice cream parlor, serving alcoholic coffee beverages, milkshakes and plenty of non-alcoholic options. Beverages will rotate depending on the season while some will stay on the menu throughout the year.
Kick in the Pants, one of The Stir’s signature cocktails, is a flavorful boozy beverage made with cold brew coffee, Mr. Black’s Cold Brew Liqueur, Hamilton 151 and Overproof Rum, paired with Mexican Coke and topped with cream. Those with a more adventurous palate will enjoy the Siciliano, a popular Italian cocktail fashioned with cold brew coffee, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, Amaro Averna, simple syrup and club soda.
According to acting manager Michael McGrane, The Stir will have a full-service bar and a spacious patio area.
Inspired by pop culture, Bronson says his goal is to capture different periods from each generation that will throw people back to “simpler” times. Old-school items will be displayed throughout the coffeeshop like an Atari and vintage cartridge games.
“We want things that are going to immediately ignite good memories and good feelings,” Bronson says.
Gin and Reel is located within The Stir and will take guests back in time to the Prohibition era. If you can find the hidden entrance, sip on top-notch spirits in this cozy cocktail cavern.
Expect a “vintage Hollywood feel” while sampling a gin and tonic flight. Choose four gins from a selection of more than 40 specialty gins and pair it with a tonic of your choice, or select your favorite gin and choose four flavorful tonics.
In an era where screen time has begun to surpass physical human interaction, Bronson says he wants to create a space for people to engage and connect with each other face-to-face.
“It’s a place to get away and try to forget about 2019 for a little while and jump back 90 years in history and do things the old way,” Bronson says.
