In this (short-lived, we hope) series, the PHOENIX magazine editorial and art teams share what quarantine is like for them, from who they’re sheltering in place with to where they’re ordering takeout.
How have you been moving your body?
Craig Outhier – Editor-in-Chief
Like other dispossessed gym rats, I’ve been making do at home with a routine of weird, furniture-based resistance exercises. I’ve also been riding my bike to work once a week, and hiking Piestewa Peak as responsibly as possible (mask, wide berths, etc.).
Leah LeMoine – Managing Editor
I’ve done yoga in my living room a few times with my mom, which was nice. As under normal circumstances, though, I struggle with the discipline of developing a routine. We’ve been more reliably walking the dogs – more often and for longer amounts of time. We all need the fresh air and mental and physical breaks from the house.

When I’m feeling stir crazy, I lace up my hiking shoes and hit the trails. It’s been a great way to stay active and sane during this surreal time. My favorite hiking spots are Sedona, Lost Dutchman State Park and the Sierra Estrella Mountains.
Judy Harper – Calendar Editor
I’m taking advantage of my shorter commute time – just down the hall – to get a jumpstart on training for my eighth 3-day 60-mile walk in November. No word yet on whether the fundraiser for breast cancer will be a casualty of the coronavirus, but no harm in preparing for it either way. I amped up my training with 4.17 miles in the Light It Up Red virtual run/walk to benefit Arizona Bleeding Disorders on Friday, and I dug out a Pat Tillman shirt and celebrated his legacy in the 4.2-mile Pat’s Run on Saturday.
I’ve also dusted off my exercise bike, which was doubling as a clothes hanger, and moved it in front of the TV. I miss riding it while watching the Suns or D-backs, but I’ve discovered that I can pedal just as swiftly to Survivor, NCIS and my guilty obsession, Naked and Afraid. No judgment, please!

Like many, I attend regularly scheduled workout classes to keep me accountable and on track to my fitness goals and was particularly bummed when my gym, BODI Scottsdale, had to close due to the coronavirus health risks. But within a week, I learned it was a non-problem! The super fit instructors there adapted their routines to accommodate what a typical person might have readily available in their homes and were quick to host live online classes via Zoom and create videos that can be viewed at any time, until the next week’s classes are posted. Props to technology for keeping things going and, um, tight!
Angelina Aragon – Associate Art Director
One thing that has helped me tremendously is hiking. I go for a hike when I need to feel grounded and to decompress. When I hike, I forget about everything going on because I am focusing on my breathing and constantly looking at all the beauty around me. It makes me feel like everything is going to be OK, and it’s a great workout physically. It’s a win-win!
I also just started taking an online Pilates + Meditation class with Randi Graves, which has been so nice. Before quarantine, Randi would come to our workplace at The Quad and teach a Pilates class during our lunch break. I really missed Pilates during this quarantine, so now that I am able to get back into that routine, it’s been amazing.
