When your X-ray, scan or blood is sent “to the lab,” doctors in these fields will likely see it.

PATHOLOGY

The detectives of the medical world use laboratory science to determine the cause and effects of disease and injury, usually through analysis of tissue, cell or body fluid samples.

Wendy Zhou, M.D.

Pathology
Med School/Year Graduated: Nanjing Medical University, 2000
Years in Practice: 14

The field of pathology is a many varied and splendid thing. What is your emphasis and expertise within the specialty?
My passion lies in the intricate world of gastrointestinal and liver pathology. From decoding the mysteries of autoimmune- and drug-induced colitis to uncovering the subtle clues of gastric and colorectal cancer, I specialize in diagnosing and guiding treatment for some of the body’s most dynamic and essential systems.

As a physician who does most of her work in a lab and rarely see patients, do you still perceive an emotional-human side of your work?
Certainly. In many ways, my role bridges the gap between science and humanity. I work closely with clinicians, discussing cases and contributing to decisions that can impact lives. Even though my interactions are primarily with tissue, I never lose sight of the individual behind them. That perspective keeps my work deeply human.

What recent technological advancements in pathology have had the most significant impact on patient outcomes?
With next-generation technologies, there are many advancements in personalized medicines. For example, all colorectal cancer patients now undergo extended RAS mutational testing to determine eligibility for anti-EGFR [epidermal growth factor receptor] therapy, as RAS mutations predict resistance to these treatments. Universal dMMR testing is also essential to identify Lynch syndrome and determine suitability for immunotherapy.

Diagnosing disease is a serious job. Are there any fun or light elements to your work that might surprise readers?
Absolutely! Naming things in pathology can be oddly entertaining. Where else do you find terms like “foamy macrophages” or “popcorn cells” or “Orphan Annie nuclei” in serious science? And honestly, there’s a bit of a thrill in spotting something rare – it’s like finding a Where’s Waldo? in a sea of cells!

Your work is akin to being a medical detective. Do you gravitate toward mystery-solving in the culture you consume as well – true-crime podcasts, procedural TV shows, detective novels, etc.?
The thrill of solving mysteries at work spills into my downtime. I love detective novels, suspense movies and true-crime podcasts – they’re like pathology cases with plot twists. Shows like Sherlock or Forensic Files? Totally my guilty pleasure. It’s all about the clues!

You went to medical school in Nanjing, China! Are you from there? What are your favorite spots for home-style Chinese food in the Valley?
I’m originally from Shanghai, and I have a deep love for Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisine. In the Valley, I often visit two authentic Chinese restaurants: Best Hong Kong Dining and Shaanxi Garden. They’re my go-to spots for a taste of home.

What hobbies and interests do you have outside medicine?
I really enjoy fitness, reading, listening to music and spending time with my family.

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
A scientist. I did my Ph.D. in immunology and vaccine development.
