What inspired you to pursue a chiropractic career?
At 12 years old, I suddenly couldn’t turn my head to the right. My pediatrician told me that I was “fine.” Disgruntled, as I was not fine, I chose to be a doctor of chiropractic, so one day I could do something to help my patients be better at their visits.
As someone with six children, do you continue to seek chiropractic care? They can be hard on the body!
Of course! As someone with unexplained pains for over a decade in my youth, getting adjusted allowed me to breathe, run, move and live pain-free, changing my life! And chiropractic care is enormously helpful during pregnancy and afterward.

What are the most common misconceptions about chiropractors? Anything readers would be surprised to learn about your work?
The whole body is interconnected. Pain and dysfunction are not isolated to a single area but involve all the connecting tissues and movement patterns. My patients are surprised that I know exactly where the underlying problems are. “You must be a magician” [is something I hear often].
You’re also a healthy eating advocate and have a large organic garden. What are you growing these days?
The keys to best health are nutrition, movement, hydration and emotional wellness. On 2,200 square feet of growing space, we grow apricots, apples, peaches, celery, sorrel, fennel, grapes, mulberries, mint, plums, pomegranates, artichokes, blackberries, carrots, society garlic, green onions, tomatoes, lettuces, sweet potatoes… we grow and eat about 3,000 pounds of food a year.
Despite your healthy eating, you are from Wisconsin and must hanker for something cheesy from time to time?
Can’t take the Wisconsin out of the girl… I love almost all cheese! If Trader Joe’s is out of Parmesan, it was probably us. We make all our own meals, and my husband, Daniel, and I are both excellent cooks.
You’re also an avid hiker. What’s your favorite local trail?
Siphon Draw at Superstition [Mountains]. In spring, you hike a mile through blooming wildflowers, then up the slot canyon and sheer the huge rock. Thinking you’re almost there, just kidding, you need to scramble down and climb the wash up to the actual top. Near the end, the overhang has you convinced you just can’t, but you do. The reward is an amazing experience on the Flatiron, looking over both the whole city and Weavers Needle.
“If I wasn’t a chiropractor, I’d be…”
I already wear a lot of hats. I love being a mom of six, conducting a grade-school choir, being a scout leader, scuba diving and enjoying musical theater. Maybe someday I’ll write a Broadway musical.

What inspired you to pursue a chiropractic career?
I injured my lower back lifting weights, and the physical therapy and medications weren’t helping. In desperation, I tried the chiropractor that relieved my mother’s headaches and helped my brother to continue playing college football. I was amazed at the results and loved the idea of helping others.
Do you still regularly see a chiropractor yourself?
Well, the Top Doc in our family is my wife, Dr. Larissa Woolston. She is amazing, and we check each other weekly so we can be in peak shape. I was in a severe car crash in 2019 and was treated for headaches, neck, shoulder and lower back pain.

And now you specialize in chiropractic care for patients who have been in auto accidents. How do these cases differ from your others?
Any provider can take an auto accident case, but most should not. We concluded we were going to add value to cases and not damage them. Over the years, we have established relationships with vetted medical specialists to ensure the best outcomes. Legal cases require a different level of professionalism.
Do you talk shop at home with your wife, or keep it at the office?
She’s amazing, as she runs the overall operation. It is difficult to be in business together as it is easy to always talk shop. We have gotten better over the years to allow each other to manage what we are best at.
What are the most common misconceptions about chiropractors? Anything readers would be surprised to learn?
Over 60 percent of M.D. visits could be chiropractic visits. Dr. Richard Sarnat, an M.D., did a seven-year study with BCBS [Blue Cross Blue Shield] of Illinois. The [chiropractic doctors] were the portal of entry for headaches and musculoskeletal issues. The outcome was that it saved tens of millions of dollars with less pharmaceuticals, hospitalizations and surgeries, with overall better health scores than standard medical care.
You’re an avid road cyclist! What are your favorite local routes?
I used to love to circle around Pinnacle Peak going up and down Happy Valley [Road] and Dynamite [Boulevard]. I have had too many close calls with distracted drivers. I treat patients that have been in bike accidents, so I continue my training indoors.
“If I wasn’t a chiropractor, I’d be…”
An attorney. I love to help those that have been wronged and need help. I have many attorney friends [and] I respect what they do and the passion they bring to their clients.

How we picked our Top Chiropractors
PHOENIX magazine generated its Top Chiropractors list via an online survey of practicing chiropractors in Greater Phoenix. Working with the Arizona Association of Chiropractic, PHOENIX launched an online voting portal in the fall and invited all practicing Valley chiropractors in good standing with the Arizona Board of Chiropractic Examiners to provide the names of three doctors whom they deem the best in their profession. At the conclusion of voting, we digitally tallied the votes. Once the top vote-getters were determined, our fact-checkers verified their information.
PHOENIX magazine does not give any preference to chiropractors who advertise. The list was determined solely on the votes we received, and our sales staff did not see the list until the chiropractors had been contacted and confirmed by our editorial fact-checkers. All providers on the list were cross-checked against the board’s online directory. Those with disciplinary actions within the last three years were removed from the list.
