Giving these down-low dining destinations the credit they deserve.

The Peppermill
Chef-owner Chad Bolar spent nine years working for culinary star Christopher Gross, and his classical chops are deliciously apparent at this unassuming strip mall spot – part modern-day steakhouse, part gastropub embraced by cuisine-starved South Tempeans.

Zu Izakaya
This cozy bar and restaurant captures the spirit of a Japanese izakaya pub without its more traditional trappings. A massive menu of tempura, tacos, hot pots and grilled meats includes gyoza dumplings, chile-garlic edamame and tempura sweet potatoes.

The Hudson Eatery & Bar
Whiskey, bourbon and other well-oaked spirits are the collective jam of this breezy gastropub. The mindful if scant 12-item food menu is headlined by a spot-on Philly cheesesteak filled with tender chopped sirloin in a gooey amnion of melted provolone and tangy pickled peppers. Vegetarian dishes include tahini pasta and a white bean cilantro stew.
