Mesa-based artist Corinne Geertsen (corinnegeertsen.com) has fully embraced technology’s increased role in our lives. Although formally trained in drawing and painting, she now uses computer programs like Photoshop and Lightroom to transpose historical photos onto contemporary backgrounds she either digs up or shoots herself, creating whimsical images that make us question our place in history and the daily lives of our progenitors. Geertsen’s studio functions within the maximalist boundaries of the computer screen – an ever-growing collection of 39,000 images and digital resources breathe a living quality into her photo collages, all under the carefully calibrated lighting of her office space. “Photoshop matches the way I think,” she says. “When I first found Photoshop, it was like I discovered the other half of the map.”
