The Scottsdale Plaza Resort underwent an ownership change and makeover in 2025, emerging as Kimpton Miralina Resort & Villas in early 2026. The “new” property’s debut staycation season is setting up to be a banger – for both party-loving extroverts (Saturday DJ sessions at CIMA Pool and live music at on-site restaurant Hecho Libre) and relaxation-seeking introverts (weekly sound baths and expanded service menu at The Centre & Spa). That “something for everyone” ethos extends to other au courant additions: chilled bowls for “doggie cool-down service” for canine guests; signature CENTRÉ full-body exercise classes for fitness fiends; Storytelling Under the Stars evening series for culture vultures; chef demonstrations for foodies; and floating mahjong social hours at CIMA for devotees of the trending tile game.
In a refreshing acknowledgement of how unbearably hot Phoenix summers can get, Miralina offers in-room Cool Kits (handheld fans, SPF lip balm and electrolyte powder) and will chill the CIMA water for the summer, so a dip in the pool will feel more like a cooling plunge and less like a swim in a bowl of soup come July and August.

Water fun is the reason for the season at the family-friendly J.W. Desert Ridge, whose AquaRidge Waterpark got an $18-million, 140,000-square-foot pool transformation in 2023. Three new slides add to the frivolity, from the Little Eddy beginner body slide for wee ones to The Drop, a high-speed slide with twists, turns and a steep drop that will thrill teens. AquaNights Summer extends the revelry past sunset, with expanded hours for the lazy river and slides (9 p.m. on weekdays; 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays), and a Bubble Bash family dance party and drone show on Friday nights. Don’t skip a meal – on-site restaurants Kembara and Tía Carmen (helmed by celebrity chef Angelo Sosa) are all killer, no filler. Even the breakfast buffet – often a snooze at hotels – is done beautifully in Tía Carmen’s Mercado experience ($44 per person), which includes pozole, aguas frescas, tortillas and an array of Mexican meats (birria, carnitas, pollo guisado) for DIY tacos. Tía’s new Savor the Art of Sunday Brunch ($62 per person) runs through May 24 and boasts the Mercado buffet plus elevated touches like a tableside espresso martini tower and a seafood tower.

In 2026, we take for granted that every nice resort has a spa. When Camelback Inn opened its spa in 1989, that wasn’t the case – in fact, it was the first resort spa in the Marriott hospitality chain and a pioneer in what would become the Valley’s luxury wellness culture. Nearly four decades later, The Spa at Camelback Inn reopened in February after a $25-million transformation. Everything is centered on ariVéa, the spa’s “holistic philosophy inspired by the natural rhythms of the Sonoran Desert,” and its four Pathways to Well-Being: Detox, Soothe, Harmonize and Restore. These pathways are reflected in the spa menu – try a Detox grounding manicure or a Restore muscle recovery massage – and in the food menu at Ora Café, which serves nutritionist-guided goodies organized by pathway, plus adaptogenic beverages, natch. If it all sounds a bit too woo-woo for you, don’t fret – you don’t have to subscribe to ariVéa to reap the benefits of a juniper-scented massage or the spa’s new Wellness Circuit (Himalayan salt sauna, aromatherapy steam cavern, cold therapies, limestone infrared loungers, solarium with vitality pool) or Wellness Waters (an outdoor, multi-temperature hydrotherapy circuit).

The Valley’s culinary literati collectively wept when chef Rich Hinojosa’s CRUjiente Tacos closed last year. After months of wondering what was next for the San Antonio-bred chef, they rejoiced when he announced he’d joined the Montelucia as executive chef.
Hinojosa is gradually putting his touch on the resort’s dining concepts, with pop-up wine dinners (he’s a level two certified sommelier); a budding partnership with K4 Ranch to bring in premium Arizona beef for an expanded steakhouse offering at Prado; and, most tantalizingly for fans of CRU, new tacos at Taqueria Centro. He is also strengthening the resort’s commitment to seasonality and local sourcing with his long-standing relationships with Valley farmers and purveyors.
Dining isn’t the only thing getting a zhuzh at the Montelucia – its famed Joya Spa, which boasts 31,000 square feet of Moroccan hammam-inspired amenities and services, is undergoing a revamp this year. Changes won’t be complete by this staycation season, but should be by summer 2027.
