The 5 Ws of the Valley’s Hip-Hop Scene

What: Phoenix’s hip-hop scene is strong, diverse and, most importantly, growing, with a sound shaped by the Valley’s Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities, insiders say. “So many people from all over the country migrate to Arizona, so the artists here have a smorgasbord of stylistic traits,” says Michael Gamarano, a local producer and engineer at HandKrafted Studios, who is better known as local rapper Bag of Tricks Cat.

Why is the scene growing? Artists here aren’t limited by major labels, allowing them more creative freedom. Performers like Mega Ran and Futuristic leverage social media for fan engagement, while local promoters boost the community with events at new venues like 9th and Jackson (9thandjacksonphx.com), which hosts both local and national acts.

Who should you listen to? Besides the artists previously mentioned, Willy Northpole continues to write fantastic rhymes after the release of his major-label debut, Tha Connect, in 2009. The duo By Storm, composed of rapper RiTchie With A T and producer Parker Corey (both previously part of the Tempe-based trio Injury Reserve), also deserves attention.

When: The Blunt Club hip-hop night is still going strong after 23 years, so be sure to follow @thebluntclub on Instagram to find out when it’ll pop up next.
