Fertility
Med School/Year Graduated: University of Arizona, 2011
Years in Practice: 7

How has the fertility field evolved since you started practicing?
Over the past decade, a significant advancement [has been] the genetic testing of embryos. The current scientific platforms are much more accurate in identifying genetically healthy embryos with more precision than prior embryo biopsy analysis – dramatically boosting pregnancy success rates and lowering miscarriage rates.

What are some of the biggest ethical questions that come up when someone is considering IVF treatment? How do you discuss these with your patients?
A key ethical question patients face is the fate of extra frozen embryos after patients achieve their ideal family size. We guide patients through these discussions prior to IVF, which includes exploring all potential outcomes of treatment plans. We take great care to ensure that the wishes of our patients are respected.

What or who inspired you to enter the fertility field?
My mom! Together, we run Southwest Fertility Center, which is the longest-standing fertility practice in Arizona. She founded the practice in 1980. We are the only mother-son fertility practice in the Unites States.

Is there a piece of pop culture (movie, TV show) in which you think fertility struggles were accurately portrayed?
Comedians Hasan Minhaj and Ronny Chieng use humor and honesty in sharing their fertility journeys and highlight male-factor infertility, which is a common, but often overlooked, cause of fertility challenges. These stories emphasize that infertility is multifactorial, and open dialogue is necessary to providing people with support they need.

You grew up in Phoenix! Any favorite local haunts?
I went to grade school and high school in Arizona and therefore am an All Saints Tiger and Brophy Bronco through and through. My favorite local eating spots are Chula Seafood, The Collins Small Batch Kitchen, Viet Shack and my mother’s homemade Indian food.

What interests and hobbies do you have outside medicine?
My life outside of work includes exercising at Barry’s Bootcamp, competing in tennis tournaments with my wife (when she invites me), and coaching my three kids’ sports teams. It’s the perfect mix of fitness, fun and family that keeps me energized and inspired.

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
Easy answer. Not as happy…
