Geriatric Medicine
Med School/Year Graduated: Midwestern University, 2001
Years in Practice: 23

Like many geriatricians, you first trained as an internal medicine doctor. What additional training does one receive to work in geriatrics?
Both internal medicine and family medicine physicians can pursue additional fellowship training in geriatrics, most often through a one-year fellowship… which focuses on geriatric syndromes, chronic disease and socio-economic challenges found in a variety of health-care settings. There are geriatric research opportunities available as well.

What inspired you to specialize in geriatric medicine?
It was a calling I felt even before starting medical school. As a geriatrician, it is deeply rewarding to make a difference in the lives of
older adults.

What are some practical tools or exercises people can do to stave off dementia?
Preventive measures are largely the same as prevention of heart disease and stroke. Engage in regular physical activity, avoid smoking and excess alcohol intake, focus on good blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes management, and enjoy a socially stimulating lifestyle.

As a palliative care specialist, have you worked with death doulas or midwives? If so, how was that experience?
They provide companionship and support to people who are dying. Although I have not personally collaborated with one, this work is complementary to what primary care physicians, geriatricians and palliative medicine specialists do when supporting their patients in goals of care, quality of life and guidance near the end of life.

Are there any books, movies, TV shows or podcasts that have impacted your work as a geriatrician? Stories that have given you new insights or made you think about your practice differently?
We love learning new ways to help patients in medicine. The GeriPal and The Curbsiders podcasts are favorites on long drives.

What interests and hobbies do you have outside medicine?
Reading, hiking and spending time with family.

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
I think I would still be connected to health care in some way. I started out as a nurse and just kept going back to school because I love the work.
