Cardiovascular Disease
Med School/Year Graduated: Tulane University, 1997
Years in Practice: 18
You practice “interventional” cardiology. What does that mean? How is it different from cardiovascular surgery?
Interventional cardiology uses small, specialized tools inserted into blood vessels through a needlestick to treat heart problems without the need for major surgery. Techniques like stenting blocked arteries allow doctors to fix heart issues with less pain and quicker recovery.
Do most young cardiologists now emerge from their residencies with interventional training? It seems like classic cardiology is a thing of the past.
Many young cardiologists train in interventional techniques to fix clogged arteries as well as damaged heart valves. However, traditional cardiology – focused on diagnosing, treating and preventing heart problems – is still crucial. Combining both approaches gives patients the best possible care.
Which recent innovation or invention do you think holds the most promise for cardiovascular disease outcomes?
Artificial intelligence is transforming heart care by improving diagnosis, tailoring treatments and speeding up new medication discoveries. Combined with tools like advanced imaging and robotic procedures, it’s paving the way for better, more effective outcomes for heart disease patients.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about heart disease and heart health?
Well, first and foremost, that heart disease is often preventable through just lifestyle changes. Simple things like regular exercise, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and managing stress can significantly reduce the risk. A daily brisk, 30-minute walk around your neighborhood can save your life.
What is your least “heart-healthy” indulgence?
Being from New Orleans, my least heart-healthy indulgence has to be a good ol’ Cajun crawfish boil, complete with spicy seasoning, sausage and buttery corn. I just tell myself it’s research on what not to recommend to my patients!
You speak Vietnamese and French! What are your favorite local haunts for those cuisines?
Pho Viet [in Glendale] is my go-to for Vietnamese food – it’s where I get my pho fix. I say “Let’s pho-get about our problems and eat!” As for French… unfortunately, it’s been so long since I’ve spoken it, my “haunt” is probably the bread aisle at the grocery store for a baguette [laughs].
What hobbies and interests do you have outside medicine?
Outside of medicine, my greatest joy is spending time with my amazing wife, Abby, who supports me in everything I do, as well as attending my two boys’ sports events and extracurricular activities. Family time is truly my favorite hobby.
What shows are you streaming these days?
I’m binging on Lioness, which follows one of the CIA covert programs, and also The Rings of Power, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Lincoln Lawyer [is a] courtroom drama that always sucks me in. And Cobra Kai. Hello… I’m from the 1980s!
