You played college basketball at Pepperdine before enrolling in medical school. Did playing such an impact-intensive sport help guide you into orthopedics?
Yes, basketball definitely prepared me for medical school and guided me to orthopedics.
I decided that if I was not going to become a professional athlete, I wanted to stay involved with sports and take care of professional athletes.
You completed your fellowship at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute in Miami, where you served as a team doctor for the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins. What are some of your favorite memories from that time?
Being in the locker room with the [Heat] and then walking out of the tunnel into the arena to a complete “white out” during the playoffs. There were flame throwers going off. The energy was electric!
What are the “easiest” or simplest issues you treat? The most challenging or complex?
Well, no surgery is easy, as there is nuance and risk to everything we do. My most common surgery is arthroscopic meniscal surgery of the knee. The most challenging would likely be traumatic multi-ligament knee dislocations [like simultaneous ACL and MCL injuries].
How have knee replacements improved in the last decade or so?
First, implant design and materials have improved to decrease wear rate and allow implants to last longer. Robotics have also led to more “precise” surgery, and advances in peri-operative pain management allow patients to go home the same day of the surgery.
What are some measures people can take early on to prevent musculoskeletal injuries later in life?
Prioritizing physical fitness and developing a routine of working out at a young age. These are the things that can really help prevent future musculoskeletal issues.
What are your interests and hobbies outside medicine?
Family, working out and watching college sports [like] Pepperdine, UCLA and Oregon. I also do some coaching.
What shows are you streaming these days?
My wife and I enjoy The Amazing Race. Otherwise, if my TV is on, it is usually live sporting events.
“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
A sports coach, most likely basketball or football, or a youth recreation leader.

Podiatry
Med School/Year Graduated: California College of Podiatric Medicine, 1997

Your expertise in wound care has led to the prevention of amputations. Why is wound management such a critical part of podiatry?
I often say, “See me for a scratch,” because any break in the skin can quickly get infected and out of control – [whether the patient is] diabetic or not. Because of the gravity of [foot and ankle wounds], I treat every patient with a high level of urgency, as I’ve seen poor circulation in the feet corresponding with poor circulationin the heart or neck. It’s not just about the feet or legs, it’s about the entire person.
What are some of the most difficult or complex podiatry cases you’ve encountered?
Burn cases and patients with renal disease and infection can be complex, [often] needing grafts and advanced surgical techniques to get wounds to heal.
What are some practical things everyone can do to improve their foot and ankle health?
Please, please, please, stop eating sugar, fake sugars, simple carbohydrates and processed foods. Learn to be mindful of your blood sugar levels and insulin levels. Even if you don’t have diabetes yet, these substances are highly neuro-toxic, which can lead to neuropathy and tingling, numb feet. Hygiene-wise, it’s important to actually use soap and wash your feet and clean between the toes. If you have odor, you may have fungus, and there are solutions for this.
What is K-Laser therapy? How do you use it in your practice?
[It’s] a class 4 laser, which is utilized for pain and inflammation [related to] plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis and other conditions. It has other uses, as well, such as for plantar warts and neuropathy.
What is your own go-to shoe for everyday wear as a busy doctor? Any brands you recommend?
I wear stable shoes in clinic with my custom orthotics, such as a Birkenstock clog, a Dansko clog and fashionable sneakers such as the New Balance 327 or the Veronica Beard Valentina or Karhu Mestari.
What hobbies and interests do you have outside medicine?
I love spirituality, prayer, quantum theory and physics. I [also enjoy] exercise,
including yoga, hiking, and water- and snow-skiing.
“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
I’d be a shoe and perfume designer… my sense of smell is incredible, to the tune that I can smell a wound and put the patient on the correct antibiotic. Because of this superpower, I have always loved and have a collection of beautiful perfumes.
