You’re a strong supporter of plant-based nutrition. As a mother and pediatrician, how do you convey its benefits to both your own children and your patients?
I try to dispel dietary myths we’ve learned, like “growing kids need cow milk” or “not eating meat causes anemia.” I meet families where they are, knowing that different upbringings and cultures may value eating animal products but emphasizing that we can all add more fruits and veggies!
How do you stay updated on advancements in pediatric medicine?
I’m a super nerd. I join weekly Zoom lectures, listen to medical podcasts and love attending medical conferences.
How do you adjust your communication style for the different age groups that you work with?
Being a kid at heart makes it easy for me to relate to patients of all ages. I discuss their interests, while sprinkling in dad jokes and being playful with them. A majority of my patients have fun during our visits.
Your care philosophy includes treating patients as you would your own children. Can you give an example of a time this felt especially true or powerful?
Sure. I take extra time to stay in the room with anxious kids while they get their vaccines, holding their hand and sharing funny cat or dog videos to distract them while they get shots. It helps!
What are the most common cases you see? The most challenging?
The COVID pandemic led to many more children having anxiety or depression, which are often challenging cases. [Subsequently,] I completed an integrative medicine fellowship that taught me holistic strategies to augment their treatment.
What are your interests and hobbies outside medicine?
Volunteering in the community fills my happiness bucket. I also love hiking and am addicted to audiobooks.
What shows are you streaming these days?
I watch The Office most evenings when I need a laugh. I’ll admit I’m a Bravo channel junkie, watching most of The Real Housewives, Below Deck and Southern Charm.

It’s a sobering and sad reality that children get sick and sometimes need surgical intervention. Does it take a special kind of emotional fortitude, or sensitivity, to do what you do?
Facing a family with a sick child is challenging, but it’s reassuring to know we have the expertise to help. A family’s advocacy and commitment to their child’s well-being makes a big difference, and we work as a team to ensure the child’s full recovery.
How is the pediatric version of your specialty distinct from the adult version? Which conditions and disorders do you most often treat?
Children come in all sizes, from premature babies to adult-sized teens. Each one has different needs and deserves a tailored approach. Small babies might need surgical repair of congenital anomalies, [while] older kids may need a laparoscopic appendectomy. My expertise is in chest wall disorders and inflammatory bowel disease.
When do bowel diseases like colitis and Crohn’s typically first manifest? Do most patients experience onset in childhood?
Onset is most common between ages 15 to 35 and again around 60 years, [but] about 25 percent of cases present in childhood. The rate of patients with very early onset IBD, less than 5 years old, is low but increasing rapidly.
If a young patient needs a colectomy, what does follow-up care look like? Do they continue to work with you and a gastroenterologist?
Yes, follow-up after colectomy is lifelong and involves both the surgeon and gastroenterologist. Like all patients with inflammatory bowel disease, these patients are best cared for in a multidisciplinary setting with their doctors, dieticians, psychologists and coordinators working together to give them the best possible outcomes.
You served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala for three years before going to medical school. In what ways did your experience there shape your career path?
Living in a developing country gave me a new perspective on life. I realized I needed to make a tangible impact by helping people during their most critical moments – when their children are sick. Health is the most basic need, and I felt compelled to contribute in a way that truly matters.
You’re a big reader. What’s the last book you enjoyed?
Playground by Richard Powers. It has themes of marine biology, AI and friendship. [I also liked] James by Percival Everett. It’s a re-telling of Huckleberry Finn through the eyes of Jim, the runaway slave who accompanies him.
