Though it touches nearly every specialty, cancer will ultimately lead the majority of patients to these specialties.

Hematology & Oncology

Physicians here must be board-certified in both hematology (blood and bone marrow diseases) and oncology (cancer), as the fields frequently overlap.

Surgical Oncology
Med School/Year Graduated: University at Buffalo, 1993
Years in Practice: 25

As a cancer specialist, what are the most common surgeries you perform?
I specialize in resections of upper gastrointestinal malignancies and melanoma – essentially, cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and gallbladder.

And some of the rarest?
Various forms of soft tissue sarcoma, which are cancers that develop in muscles, tendons, fat and other internal soft tissues. Those are relatively rare.

Has your life been touched by cancer? Does that firsthand insight inform your care?
Both of my parents suffered from cancer when I was a youth. My father passed away from cancer and my mother remains a long-term survivor of a particular disease which – at the time of her diagnosis 40 years ago – was nearly always fatal. Given my parents’ experience, I’m inspired to make a difference.

How is surgical oncology, and the art of removing tumors, most different technically from general surgery? What special skills does it require?
Malignancies often do not respect normal anatomic boundaries, rendering their removal with curative intent more challenging. With careful preparation, a surgical oncologist must anticipate an unexpected presentation of the tumor and be prepared to adapt. Patience is truly virtuous when managing complex malignancies in the operating room.

What are some of the biggest concerns patients have pre-surgery? How do you help assuage them?
Downtime from work and normal activities are always a concern. It is imperative to remain direct and honest in conversations with patients. Being a good listener with empathy has been beneficial.

You’re from Buffalo, New York! What are your favorite wing spots in Phoenix?
Valley Wings and ATL Wings at 40th Street and Thomas [Road] are my go-tos.

What hobbies and interests do you have outside medicine?
Skiing and attending ASU sporting events. Other local teams, too!

What shows are you streaming these days?
Landman and Slow Horses.

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
A detective or a college professor.
