Sleek, modern resorts have their allure, but sometimes you want lodging with a little more character, a little more history. Casa de Sierra Nevada has both in spades. The hotel stretches across six historical mansions dating from the 16th-18th centuries in the world-renowned art city – and UNESCO World Heritage site – San Miguel de Allende, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato. “The hotel embodies the town’s historical and cultural legacy,” general manager Michael Näther says. Its 23 suites and 14 rooms are situated in a 16th-century convent full of local art, handcrafted tile, intricate textiles and antiques. “Beyond aesthetics, the hotel’s experiences elevate guests’ connection to Mexican heritage,” Näther says. “We recommend joining resident artist Hermes Arroyo in a traditional mojigangas [giant puppets] workshop or exploring regional flavors in the Sazón Cooking School housed in an 18th-century mansion – both part of the guest experience which makes Casa de Sierra Nevada a cultural treasure.” Rates start at $475/night for January and February. belmond.com
