“I have always felt a big part of my job is to be a storyteller,” says Kami Nunez, chief creative officer and partner of Chalk Design & Build, the full-service interior design and construction company that executed the look for this Art Deco-inspired lounge in downtown Chandler in 2022. “We take a client’s vision… and help them create a story that unifies the space we are designing with their brand voice.”

Nunez says the goal for BlackSheep was to develop a “visually stunning haven that merged industrial chic with a touch of rebellion.” It was important to preserve the history of the Hotel Chandler building (built in 1905), while embracing modernity via maximalist design elements.

“Large communal tables in reclaimed alder wood invite conversation and connection, while playful details like a lip-inspired tabletop add a touch of fun,” she says. “It’s a space that defies expectations.”

  • Walnut C&C

A sleek trio of bespoke walnut-slatted “custom and contract” accents line the back wall of the spacious bar and restaurant, lending “a layer of sophistication” to the space, Nunez says.

  • Wine Carousel

This mechatronic wine bottle display is “both functional and surprising, a conversation starter that embodies the BlackSheep spirit.”

  • Marquee Arches

Custom-built wooden arches lined with Edison bulbs “create a warm, vintage vibe” behind the bar.

  • Chain Art Installation

BlackSheep’s branding is showcased in a “playful and unexpected” way on this series of metal chains that Nunez describes as “equal parts edgy and inviting.”

  • Leather Upholstery Seating

A mix of seating options – from communal tables with brown suede barstools to cozy nooks covered in emerald-colored leather – “encourages people to gather and interact,” Nunez says.
