Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Med School/Year Graduated: Medical College of Wisconsin, 1995

Years in Practice: 25

Maternal-fetal medicine is a first-time Top Docs category this year. Can you give us the elevator pitch?

[First], a physician needs to complete a four-year OB/GYN residency followed by a three-year maternal-fetal medicine fellowship, which focuses on caring for complicated maternal medical conditions, specialized fetal ultrasounds, fetal abnormalities and other complex pregnancy issues. In sum, we’re the most highly trained providers of obstetrical care.

Why is it considered a high-risk pregnancy if a woman is 35 or older?

Because they have more pregnancy-related complications, such as chromosomal abnormalities and miscarriage. Stillbirth, multiple gestations, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes and placental abnormalities are [also concerns]. The need for cesarean delivery is also statistically higher.

You must be busy! The median age for new mothers in the U.S. is now over 30, isn’t it?

Yes, the median age has risen from 27 years old in 1990 to 30 years old in 2024.

How can a woman increase her chances of having a healthy pregnancy?

Healthy pregnancy begins prior to conception via maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, supplementation of folic acid and discussion of the potential risks of various medical conditions and medications on pregnancy. Knowledge is power!

What led you to specialize in maternal-fetal medicine as opposed to general obstetrics?

For me, maternal-fetal medicine is more challenging and rewarding… There is no better feeling than seeing the instant love and joy in a new mother’s eyes when she is handed her baby, especially when she thought she could never have a successful pregnancy.

Your practice also includes a wellness spa. Which treatments are safe for pregnancy?

Many are safe, including facials and massages. I think that massage therapy is probably the most desired service by pregnant women as it helps alleviate some of the physical discomforts of pregnancy.

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”

I’d probably be a figure skating instructor, as I was a competitive skater for over 10 years. I coached during [college]. In fact, the first time I came to Phoenix was when one of my figure skaters was competing in the national championships!
