Some employers show appreciation for their staff with a pizza party. David Tyda took his team to Mexico. The research-and-development trip included distilleries and tequila bars in the state of Jalisco to acquaint the staff at Barcoa, Tyda’s Downtown Phoenix tequila and mezcal bar, with the products they pour. “The bar’s mission is really all about keeping these stories of cultural history alive, so it’s very important to me that everything is authentic,” Tyda says. He shares highlights from their tour of Jalisco and some of the best bars and food in Mexico.
Carnitas Jaimes
There’s no better place than Mexico for tacos. One of Tyda’s favorite spots, Carnitas Jaimes, is located in Arandas, just outside the Jaliscan capital of Guadalajara. “Not only was it a great place to cool off after finishing our distillery tours, but also to grab some tacos,” he says. “It’s fun as hell, even though it’s a full-service restaurant.”
Lucha Libre
Tyda recommends a visit to Guadalajara, a city known for its arts and culture scene, when in Mexico. “Always be in Guadalajara on a Tuesday for lucha libre!” he says of Mexico’s famed, theatrical wrestling matches. “Takes place every week, and stay for the dancing outside once the show is over.”
Cantaritos El Güero
This Jaliscan bar serves its namesake cocktails – cantaritos are made with citrus juices, grapefruit soda and tequila – in traditional clay mugs. “It is a must [to visit], even if you’ve been before,” Tyda says. “It’s just an essential part of getting to know Jalisco.” facebook.com/cantaritoselguero
Los Chilaquiles Restaurante
Though Tyda did not go to Los Chilaquiles on his most recent trip, he ranks the restaurant as one of the best breakfast spots in the tequila-producing state. “They have the best chilaquiles in Jalisco, and it’s the best place to hang out, especially for families.” loschilaquiles.com
