Assistance League of Phoenix’s mission is to improve the lives of children through philanthropic programs that also foster self-esteem. Through a variety of programs, the nonprofit provides shoes, clothing, books and other essential items for children in 130 high-poverty K-8 schools in the Greater Phoenix area. We recently caught up with Leann Wildberger and Rhonda Snow, a mother and daughter duo who have been volunteering with Assistance League for many years. In 2022, Snow was recognized as one of the organization’s top volunteers.

How do you serve the organization as a volunteer?
Leann Wildberger: I’ve helped with the book program, the thrift boutique, the Teddy Bear program and organizing clothes for the buses that go to low-income schools. Books, clothing and shoes are provided to children through Operation School Bell, Assistance League’s signature program that takes Delivering Dream buses to over 100 Valley schools each year. The Thrift Boutique in Central Phoenix takes in donated goods and the profits help fund Assistance League of Phoenix’s programs. The Teddy Bear program is another one of my favorites. We provide bears to the Phoenix Fire Department so children in crisis have something to cuddle. It’s a great tool to provide some emotional support to a child during a tough time.

What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer work?
Rhonda Snow: One of the things I love about this organization is that everything raised goes back to helping low-income students. We take so much for granted and when you see these children excited to get their own shoes, toothbrushes and things we use every day without thinking about them, it’s really rewarding. Oftentimes these are the only new shoes or clothes they’ll get for the entire year.

Can you tell me about a volunteer moment that stands out for you?
Wildberger: There are many positive stories about the children we help. It warms my heart to know we’re providing essentials for children who need it. I also enjoy hearing stories from our donors. One day, I was working at the thrift boutique and a customer told me how much she liked the shop, how clean it was and how friendly the staff was. It’s rewarding to hear your work is making a difference and giving someone a positive experience.

Has it been fun to share the volunteer experience?
Snow: Yes, it’s been really fun to volunteer with my mom. We have met some great people and the nice part is you can volunteer as little or as much as you’d like. I don’t have any set hours, I just come when I can. Last year, I volunteered over 600 hours. We have formed some great friendships and enjoy going to the theater or doing other things with the group we volunteer with.
