Phoenix’s food scene has been growing rapidly but family-owned food purveyors on the west side have been slinging solid meals for decades. Check out these three hidden gems next time you’re in the West Valley.

Start Your Day Off at TJ’s Homestyle Restaurant
Looking for a classic, comforting morning meal? This family-owned rustic restaurant has an old diner feel, complete with farm animal figurines, ’50s advertisements and traditional American comfort food. The Farmers Breakfast features a homemade biscuit topped with eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, tomato, onion and cheddar cheese covered in country gravy. Excellent country fried steak, too. Be sure to buy a baked good or two to go.

Grab Fresh Seafood at Mariscos 7 Mares
Get fish, shrimp, oysters, crab, and more at Mariscos 7 Mares. A mural depicts sea creatures like sharks and stingrays swimming across one wall while lively Latin music permeates the space. Specializing in Mexican seafood dishes, Mariscos 7 Mares is known for the Campechana (shrimp, octopus, snail, scallops and oysters in an aguachile sauce, a spicy marinade with chile peppers, lime juice, salt, cilantro and cucumber) and the Toritos (chile peppers stuffed with shrimp and cream cheese and wrapped in bacon).

Enjoy Authentic Mexican Tortas at Tortas Manantial
A torta is a traditional Mexican sandwich that consists of bolillo bread, a softer version of the baguette, and an assortment of fixings such as meat, cheese, sauces and vegetables. Tortas Manantial has been making fresh tortas for more than 20 years. Aguas frescas – beverages made from one or more fruits, cereals, flowers or seeds blended with sugar and water – are also a staple here. Tortas Manantial finds inspiration from the regions of Nayarit and Sinaloa, Mexico. Some of the tasty tortas are the Cubana, Pierna (pork), and the Hawaiiana. All tortas come with lettuce, tomato, onion and jalapeño, but customers can add avocado, cheese and other ingredients. Make sure to grab yours while it’s still warm and toasted.
