What’s in Your… Purse with Carey Peña

Carey Peña picked up a few habits from her days as an Emmy Award-winning news anchor and host at KTVK Channel 3 in Phoenix. She’s always only a minute or two from being camera-ready and carries her own equipment – phone light, voice recorder, tripod and iPhone – everywhere. “You never know when a story is going to present itself,” Peña says. “We can do an entire live feed that looks broadcast-quality.” These days, Peña keeps busy with her company Inspired Media 360, which produces two talk shows and two podcasts that focus on “authentic storytelling.”

People are constantly asking Peña for makeup tips. Even Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema asked her to “hook it up” and reveal how she gets her legs to shimmer. The secret? MAC Strobe Cream, an iridescent moisturizer. “I live for shine,” Peña says. She’s also a devotee of smashbox concealer and NYX highlighter, a Target purchase “recommended by a makeup artist friend… It’s like $2.”

As research for her podcast Transformation Tuesday, Peña has been bingeing on health and fitness magazines. She likes Experience Life because it has “a lot of great information for people that is mind-body-spirit… I’m trying to produce media that will help people be happier.”

Peña’s daughter has celiac disease, and she’s also transitioned to a gluten-free lifestyle. She likes Quest and EPIC bars (“I love spicy, so I always carry those Sriracha chicken bars”), which allow her to work through lunch and get home earlier. “I try to work smarter, not longer,” Peña says. “I really love being able to make a nice dinner and spend that quality time at home.”

“I’m a coffee addict, so I always keep mints. I also keep teeth-whiteners in there.”

“I’m old-school. I’m a paper girl,” Peña says. “I think sometimes journaling and taking notes is undervalued.” She keeps her calendar on her phone but also loves having it in print in her sparkly datebook. She jots down story ideas in her green journal.

“I love to carry bags that are midsize and that can go casual or dressy,” Peña says of her Louis Vuitton Kimono tote, a gift from her husband. “Everything in my life has to be fluid and practical.”
