Wood is to home decor as denim is to fashion: It’s a trend that never dies, and for good reason. Like a classic jean jacket or a pair of Levi’s, wood furniture and accessories “go” with everything and can be dressed up or down – polished and elegant or rough-hewn and casual. Here in the Valley, local artisans are bringing a modern edge to the classic medium so the trend will live on. Knock on wood.

SanTan Woodworks
Husband and wife Dave and Tara Rife of San Tan Valley never planned to have a woodworking business. They started out making wooden wall-mounted concealment flags to house weapons for a few of their friends, and before long, word of the patriotic project spread like wildfire. The couple has already produced 300 pieces in 2017 alone, and as demand rises, they hope to expand their two-car-garage project into a full-time operation with its own dedicated facility and staff. Until then, turn-around is about seven to eight weeks. Flags come in various colors and sizes. Projects range from $130-$375.

Kokopelli Custom Woodworks
Outdoor enthusiast Michael Rodriguez founded Kokopelli Custom Woodworks in the spirit of sustainability and out of a love for the Southwest. With the help of his friends and the occasional local mill, he collects wood from storm-damaged trees to repurpose into top-quality custom furniture. The wood is kiln-dried and cured to last a lifetime. Based in Tempe with another shop in Prescott, Rodriguez creates modern designs including furniture, bar tops, countertops, vanities and anything else that can be dreamed up – as long as it’s wood, of course. Their brand of modern, edgy woodwork goes beyond furniture. LumberLust also makes a number of unique wood accessories, such as iPad docks and wall hangings.
