We’ve written profusely about local lip zingers over the years, and were skeptical when we stumbled upon yet another brand at the Uptown Farmers Market. But one taste, and you’ll know: Homeboy’s founder Jacob Cutino is sitting on liquid gold.
This is literally true with his gold-colored habanero offering. Does it sting? Well, sure, but not before a burst of fruitiness. Homeboy’s red-tinted jalapeño sauce is a bit tamer, with a base of sweet onion, carrots and mustard. Perfectly balanced between sweet, sour, salty and hot, Homeboy’s sauces are ideal for chefs. Cutino based the habanero recipe on his Trinidadian stepfather’s secret recipe, which Cutino has reverse-engineered into an even better product, according to his mom. The only way it could be better: a bigger bottle.
