City of Suds
Another month, another batch of newly-opened Valley microbreweries. Honestly, it’s ridiculous. The rate of new breweries is outpacing our ability to try them all. But here’s a map in case you want to give it a shot.
1. Saddle Mountain Brewing in Goodyear
Current seasonal: A toasted pecan Bock. We’d hit the west side for that.

2. Mother Bunch brewing in Phoenix
With a pomegranate wit and watermelon gose on the menu, this Downtown brewpub appears primed for a granola-hipster onslaught.

Bowling for Dollars
Though the true economic impact of hosting a Super Bowl is a matter of some debate – last year, the New York/New Jersey area reaped only a tenth of the $550 million tourism spending projected by the NFL, according to Forbes – nobody denies it’s a heck of a money magnet. So how much will state coffers swell when Super Bowl XLIX touches down on February 1? Past Super Bowl cities* might hold the answer.
Year City Total Tax Revenue
2014 NYC/Rutherford, NJ $48 million
2013 New Orleans $34.9 million
2012 Indianapolis $24.9 million
2011 Arlington, TX $18.7 million
2010 Miami $19.8 million
* All figures are self-reported by host committees; 2014 figure is projected estimate.
HOT MIC
“Today, Phoenix firefighters and other emergency personnel answered the call quickly and determined the man did not have the virus. I am thankful we were prepared. I was impressed by our readiness response.”
– Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, following a minor furor in early November when a man at Phoenix Municipal Court attempted to delay his sentencing by announcing that he had been exposed to the Ebola virus.
Name Game
It was only a matter of time before US Airways Center went the way of, well, US Airways. Having merged with American Airlines, the soon-to-be-defunct Tempe-based carrier is no longer in the arena-underwriting business. So, starting next fall, the Downtown events venue will have a new sponsor and name: Talking Stick Resort Arena . Following the christening of Ak-Chin Pavilion and Gila River Arena last year, we’re clearly witnessing a local trend in casino-backed venue-sponsorship deals. Your move, Vee Quiva Stadium.
