Every now and then, Danilo Sodano and his daughter, Hera Ambrosio, sneak a new dish on the menu of their North Scottsdale Italian restaurant, Casa Mia. “Strascinati is a dish my dad came up with and customers love it,” Ambrosio says.

Each month, we of the PHOENIX magazine creative team ask ourselves a different question about our favorite dining and drinking experiences in the Valley. Our picks are usually hidden in the back of the magazine among our Dining Guide restaurant listings. Not any more. Our picks are going digital! Feel free to follow us on social media (at least, those of us who tweet) and be sure to tag us (@PhoenixMagazine on Twitter and @PHXMagazine on Instagram) on pics of your favorite picks.
In honor of our March feature on the art of brunching, But First, Brunch, we're asking ourselves, What's your favorite breakfast/brunch dish in the Valley?
February is fondue month and to help you celebrate, the folks at the Melting Pot have shared their cheddar cheese fondue recipe. And while a sinfully decadent meal at Arizona's favorite fondue palace makes for a great Valentine’s Day, this recipe is sure to impress for a romantic night in.
“The Greatest Show on the Green” has returned to the Valley this week. The Phoenix Open’s main event will start on Wednesday with the Annexus Pro-Am and will end Sunday. And while there’s plenty of golf sightings to be had – 2016 winner Hideki Matsuyama is back to defend his title – we all know golf isn’t really why people love the Phoenix Open. Rowdy parties at the 16th hole, the annual tumbles of drunk sorority girls in heels, and major music acts in the Birds Nest provide entertainment galore for those of us who can’t quite muster the enthusiasm for thwacking a little white ball toward a hole in silence.
Now that fall is in full swing (well, at least according to the calendar), it’s time to rustle up the hearty grub that keeps us toasty on crisp evenings and sustains us while watching football. If you’re looking for a new chili recipe, Kelli Casey, general manager of Kelly’s at Southbridge in Old Town Scottsdale (she’s not the namesake Kelly), offers up an old family recipe that's now on the menu. “The recipe is a combination of old family recipes. I took part of my father-in-law’s – he’s from Pittsburgh and a diehard Italian – and part of my Irish grandmother’s recipe and combined them,” Casey says.
There’s a catch though. Casey doesn’t want to give away all the family secrets, so she’s left out a few ingredients. But, she ensures us, “it will still be delicious.” If you want to discover what’s missing, you’ll have to visit Kelly’s at Southbridge to taste the real deal. Then, report back and let us know.
It's no secret that Halloween is no longer a "kids-only" holiday. If anything, hard-partying adults have usurped the day traditionally observed to honor the dead and later reserved for children in homemade ghost costumes to eat a lot of candy. Now it's all about making costumes "sexy" and drinking. Since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, the weekend before is sure to be maximized for freaky fun. Here's our list of the top 5 adults-only events this weekend:
