The sensation of cool wind blowing through your hair, whales leaping from the water, a fiery sunset just about to set, and a cocktail in hand are just a taste of what it’s like to step foot on a Hornblower Cruise in San Diego.
A day or night spent with Hornblower Cruises and Events is unlike any other – offering an impressive fleet of seven ships for both public cruises and charter yacht rentals. Visitors can choose from daily one and two hour Harbor Cruises, Whale & Dolphin Watching tours, Sights & Sips and Rock The Yacht! Cocktail Cruises, Champagne Jazz Brunches and nightly Sunset Dinner Cruises. To learn about the exciting new cruises available starting in April, PHOENIX magazine spoke with Marketing Manager of Hornblower Cruises and Events, Sophie Shrader.
Q: What makes a cruise from Hornblower Cruises and Events unique in terms of amenities and events?
A: We have seven different ships available and a variety of amazing cruises to choose from, like our Brunch Cruises all weekend-long, and our Sunset Dinner Cruises which go out every single night and you can spot the best sunsets while relaxing on the San Diego Bay. Beginning in April, we’ll offer live jazz music on our Brunch Cruises and also begin Cocktail Cruises on Friday and Saturday nights – which I’m very excited for. We also offer Harbor Tours six times every day and Whale & Dolphin Watching tours seasonally. Right now, you can spot gray whales on our tours until the end of April. In the summer, you’ll be able to spot blue whales. Aside from all of these incredible public offerings – our ships are available to host private, totally customizable events such as a milestone birthday, wedding or a corporate outing. You name it. We can make it happen for you and your group!
Q: Your sunset dinner cruises sound incredible. Can you tell us more about them?
A: Absolutely! We offer Sunset Dinner Cruises every single night, seven days a week. You can enjoy the gorgeous sunset out on the water during this time of year. With it being daylight savings time, the timing is perfect! Our dinner cruises are from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and they’re timed perfectly for you to catch that amazing sunset over the water with the Coronado Bridge in the background, and enjoy all the beautiful sights of San Diego Bay.
Q: Reserving your space online for fun outings is such a convenient option nowadays. Can you reserve your space with just a click of a button for a Hornblower cruise?
A: Yes! But it depends on what you’re looking to do. If you’re looking to book one of our public cruises – visit our website or give us a call at 1-855-862-0981. If you are looking for more customization for a private charter or a group tour – we recommend giving our expert planners a call to help you choose the right package and create an event that’s uniquely you!
Q: How much can a person expect to pay for a cruise with you?
A: Our Harbor Cruises cost just $27 for a one-hour tour and a two-hour tour is only $5 more for $32. Not a bad upgrade for double the time! Whale & Dolphin Watching is $43 per person during the week and $48 per person on the weekends. Our nightly Dinner Cruises start at $89 per person, and you have the option to add on fun things like drink packages and other enhancements to customize your experience. Our brunch cruises are $75 per person and our brand-new cocktail cruises are also another reasonably priced option at $42.
Q: We can’t help it, but we love a good deal! Are you currently running any special promotions?
A: We have a great deal on our harbor tours if your birthday is coming up! You can enjoy a free one or two hour harbor tour during the week of your birthday. Another great deal for celebrating a birthday is our buy 3 get one free birthday offer on brunch or dinner cruises.
Q: What cruises do you recommend for the upcoming summer season?
A: Summer is an amazing time to hop on one of our cruises because there’s so many exciting options available. Our Cocktail Cruises are in full swing every Friday and Saturday night. Beginning June 28th through September 2nd, Whale and Dolphin Watching cruises return with Blue Whales, which are the largest animals in the world! Spotting these incredible creatures in the wild is truly an extraordinary experience. A romantic option is our Full Moon Dinner Cruise; perfect to take your significant other on. This cruise occurs every month and allows for gorgeous photo opportunities. Additionally, every Friday evening in the summer we have live, local music on our dinner cruises with a series called “Bands On The Bay.” One of my favorite times for a cruise is July 4th weekend because we offer multiple options to get front row seats to the San Diego Bay Fireworks Show. You’ve never seen fireworks until you see them above your head from the water!
