Valley Coronavirus Update: 6,716 cases, 275 deaths and a new testing site

Happy headlines are hard to come by these days. Coronavirus cases in the Valley and fear concerning the pandemic continue to rise, but there are silver linings – the community is coming together (virtually) in solidarity and local organizations, businesses and residents are doing the best they can to support each other. Our duty during these tough times is to keep you informed and updated, even if the news isn’t always uplifting. Here is a roundup of coronavirus-related news in our region for Monday, April 27.

Coronavirus Cases Exceed 6,700
According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, there are now 6,716 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Arizona. Maricopa County’s confirmed cases are now more than 3,400.

275 Deaths Have Occurred Due to Coronavirus
On Sunday, the state reported that coronavirus has claimed 275 lives. That number did not change on Monday. It is the first day since March 21 that no new deaths have been reported.

U of A Begins Antibody Testing
The state has partnered with the University of Arizona to provide 250,000 coronavirus antibody tests to health care workers and first responders. The first phase of testing will begin on Thursday, April 30.

Banner Health Opens New Testing Site
Banner Health has opened a new diagnostic drive-thru testing site at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, which is now the state’s largest testing operation and can accommodate those without vehicles. Anyone experiencing symptoms or concerns of possible exposure now meet the criteria to be tested in Arizona. Patients must call Banner Health at 1-844-549-1851 to make an appointment.

Sonora Quest Ramps Up Antibody Testing
Sonora Quest, the leader in laboratory testing in Arizona, recently announced that it will now be able to perform between 1,000 and 3,000 antibody tests per day. In early May, the lab will start offering antibody testing through a direct-to-consumer solution, allowing patients to receive testing without an order from a provider or insurance.

Arizona to Resume Elective Surgeries
Over the weekend, Governor Ducey announced that in addition to ramping up testing, Arizona will resume elective surgeries on May 1.

Tgen Launches Antibodies and Immunity Study
The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is currently seeking volunteers to participate in a study that focuses on the body’s immune system and its response to COVID-19.
