Every week, we present a curated list of live music in a wide range of genres around the Valley. This week’s column features an actor known for his unique style on the stage and the screen.
September 1-2
Jeff Goldblum
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo aren’t the only members of the Wicked cast with musical chops. Their co-star Jeff Goldblum is an accomplished jazz pianist, and both Grande and Erivo appear on his fourth album, Still Blooming. Together, they interpret the great American songbook for a modern audience. To promote the record, the Jurassic Park actor is hitting the road with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra for several shows over the holiday weekend. September 6
Linkin Park
Considering Chester Bennington’s ties to the Valley, the decision for the reformed nu-metal pioneers to stop in Phoenix is a bold one. Any attempt to replace the late vocalist, who died in 2017, was likely to meet resistance from fans and Bennington’s family. However, the group’s choice of Emily Armstrong as co-vocalist was a controversial one. Many note that her association with the Church of Scientology, an organization known for its controversial stance on mental health, stands in opposition to Bennington’s. 7:30 p.m. Check website for ticket prices. PHX Arena, 201 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix, 602-379-7800, ticketmaster.com
September 7
Hyperbella
Cassidy Hilgers and Carly Bates call their duo “neo-soul,” a fitting description for its pop-inspired experimentation. Sophia Bavishi joins them as part of Crescent Ballroom’s Summer Matinee Series. 2:30 p.m. $8-$10. Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. Second Ave., Phoenix, 602-716-2222, livenation.com
