As Thanksgiving approaches, a lot of people are thinking about food. Others are writing songs and singing about it. Here are four audible edible tributes by local bands to whet your appetite for seasonal gluttony.
Authority Zero – “Chile con Crudo”
This instrumental song’s title roughly translates to “pepper with raw fish,” which sounds like a gross meal, but makes a mean metaphor. Authority Zero’s punk sensibility lends the sonic spice, while the surf twang evokes the piscine part.
Calexico – “Flores y Tamales”
Calexico’s Spanish-lyrics song “Flores y Tamales” (flowers and tamales) tells the story about dreaming of a lost love. The singer relates visions of waking up together in a little house with flowers, tamales, laughter and dancing. Sounds like a great breakfast.
Psychostick – “Do You Want a Taco?”
Comedy-metal band Psychostick made a whole food-themed album called Sandwich, with such songs as “Don’t Eat My Food,” “This Is Not a Song, It’s a Sandwich!” and “Orange.” The track “Do You Want a Taco?” stands out because of course everybody wants tacos.
Sun City Girls – “Cooking with Satan”
Arizona’s legendary experimental rock band Sun City Girls released this bizarre piano-driven dirge in 1997. Like most of the band’s songs, it makes no sense, so we’ll just leave you with the lyrics: “White trash riverboat Tom Sawyer/He tried to sue my voodoo lawyer/I held him up bringin’ home his bacon/and I cooked it lean in the kitchen with Satan.”
