A quick glance at Instagram or the latest red carpet event proves that braids are big.
Some of the hottest celebrities, from Beyoncé to Zoë Kravitz to Kerry Washington, are sporting classic styles for natural hair such as cornrows, box braids and Fulani braids. If you’re considering one of these trending looks, here are some quick tips before making an appointment with a hairstylist.

Before you pick your hairstylist, it is important to do thorough research. Check websites such as Yelp or Facebook to see what other clients have said, and be wary of professionals who have too many bad reviews or negative comments. You want to put your hair in the hands of someone you trust!

You’ll help your hairstylist out a ton if you pick out a look before arriving at your appointment. “These days, protective styles are in,” says hairstylist Erin Higgins of Erin’s Madd Skillz. “Most of my clients are wearing their natural hair and want it to continue to grow in a low-maintenance style, so they use a protective method such as braids to keep their hair healthy.”

Relaxing treatments already put a lot of stress on your hair, and braids will add too much tension. You’ll end up with damaged hair that breaks all too easily.

If you’re in pain, let your stylist know! “Braids should feel comfortable once they’re finished,” says Higgins. “I ask my clients to let me know if they are feeling uncomfortable and I will make adjustments, but the braids will begin loosening up in about two days.”

Braids are not only a flattering hairstyle, they are also easy to maintain and can help your hair become stronger and encourage it to grow on its own without any chemical services and or products that might damage your locks. Entrust your natural hair with a knowledgeable, experienced stylist who can transform your aesthetic from bland to beautiful and you may never be without braids again.
