Navigating healthcare in today’s fast-paced world can be daunting. Rushed appointments, limited access to physicians and healthcare specialists, and changes in preventative care recommendations often leave patients feeling overwhelmed and confused about their care.
Mayo Clinic believes that exceptional healthcare begins with putting the patient first. It established the Medallion Program in 2010, a concierge primary care practice designed to align with patients’ unique needs, lifestyles and schedules. It’s a personalized and elevated healthcare experience which recognizes that true health encompasses more than just the absence of disease.
To provide an in-depth look at Mayo Clinic’s Medallion Program, Medallion consultants, Neera Agrwal, M.D., Ph.D., and Stephanie Hines, M.D., addressed common questions regarding program features and how it can best meet individual healthcare needs.
Mayo Clinic’s Medallion Program
What is concierge medicine, and how does it differ from traditional healthcare models?
Concierge medicine is a personalized approach to healthcare that prioritizes strong physician-patient relationships. Unlike typical primary care practices, physicians manage a much smaller panel of patients, allowing them to develop close relationships with their patients and provide comprehensive, individualized care.
This model ensures timely access to Medallion Program medical professionals typically within 24-48 hours. In addition, patients can reach their physician directly for urgent needs after hours and on weekends.
Who is concierge medicine for?
This type of medicine is ideal for individuals who value a proactive role in their healthcare and seek a close and continuous relationship with their primary care physician and medical team. Mayo Clinic’s Medallion Program offers flexibility and convenience for busy lifestyles, personalized care that focuses on whole-person wellness, dedicated scheduling and support staff, and a team of expert healthcare professionals. This is an appropriate choice if you want to optimize your well-being, or if you have multiple chronic conditions that need close attention.
What sets Mayo Clinic’s Medallion Program apart from other concierge medicine programs?
What truly sets the Medallion Program apart from other concierge medicine programs is Mayo Clinic’s commitment to exceptional, patient-centered care. Our dedicated physicians operate as a seamless, collaborative team, working together to solve the most challenging unmet needs of patients. This coordinated approach allows for an individualized plan, collaborative specialty care and improved patient outcomes at Arizona’s No. 1 ranked hospital.
Beyond our clinical practice, Mayo Clinic is constantly engaged in medical research that is advancing the science and bringing forth new diagnostics, procedures and cures for our patients. As a result, our patients have access to the latest cutting-edge treatments and clinical trials.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Before your initial visit with your physician, our administrative staff will reach out to explain our practice and address any questions you may have.
In addition, you will likely interact with the nurse who supports your physician. They will discuss any outside records, medications and immediate health concerns, ensuring we have a thorough understanding of your initial needs.
When you meet with your physician, they will spend time getting to know you, addressing your concerns, reviewing your medical status and determining whether any additional diagnostics are needed. This in-depth meeting may last up to two hours, providing ample time for a thorough discussion of your healthcare journey and where your new Medallion relationship should begin.
