No, I don’t think so. Since each case of spine and brain surgery is unique, neurosurgeons are typically energized and stimulated by the complexities of their cases. Changes in health care may create additional burdens that lead to shorter careers, however.
What is the rarest neurological disorder you’ve encountered in your career?
Occipital-cervical dislocation in an intact individual. This is when the skull and the cervical spine are no longer intact and stable.
You were the first surgeon in the world to use ZAP radiosurgery technology. What is it? Why was it such a significant milestone for your field and you personally?
ZAP radiosurgery is an exciting new non-invasive technology for the treatment of brain tumors and lesions, making care accessible and affordable throughout the world. Barrow helped develop the prototype system, and now, more than 60 have been installed or ordered worldwide.
What is your state of mind and body during surgery? How does it feel afterward – are you drained, or amped up?
The intricacy and high stakes of the surgery generate intense focus and exhilaration. Afterward, I feel a sense of fulfillment and gratitude for improving a patient’s quality of life.
In your estimation, what is the single most exciting recent advancement or innovation in your field?
The research and development of new high-tech spinal instrumentation to improve the outcomes of spinal surgery.
What are your hobbies and interests outside medicine?
I enjoy golfing, reading, and cheering on the Cardinals and Suns. Spending time with my family and granddaughter is delightful.
