Traffic and city sounds are distant thoughts at Shash Diné Eco Retreat, where visitors stare in awe at the starry sky amidst petroglyphs and pottery shards. Married entrepreneurs Baya and Paul Meehan created the Lake Powell-area retreat as a unique Navajo glamping experience inspired by Baya’s family history in the region, which can be traced back 15 generations. Now, department store shoppers around the country can get a bit of the Shash Diné magic with the Meehans’ collaboration with Macy’s on a home goods line. “We had many talks with the Macy’s art department, and they pored over pictures of Shash Diné,” Baya says. “They did a fantastic job without even ever coming to Shash Diné. The colors and patterns really show through.” The “hotel collection” includes blankets, decorative pillows, wearable throws and more, all inspired by and incorporating indigenous themes and symbols. The pieces evoke a desert elegance, with Native American and Southwestern palettes and patterns blending with the midcentury modern design that the Meehans love – and employ in the accommodations at Shash Diné. “It puts that representation of Native Americans out there into the world,” Baya says. “This is something by us, for everybody.”
