Hike of the Week: Heifer Pasture in the Prescott National Forest

As might be expected, cows are the headliners on this hike that follows Forest Road 9650R north of Cordes Junction. The dirt back road run through sunny grasslands of Prescott National Forest. Views of distinctive Estler Peak and the Bradshaw Mountains roll out as the route climbs to a high pasture with livestock a watering hole and windmill.

  • ELEVATION:  3,889 – 4,151 feet
  • BEST SEASON: October – April
  • FACILITIES: none

GETTING THERE: From Interstate 17 north of Cordes Junction, take exit 268 for Orme/Dugas Road. Turn right at the bottom of the offramp and go 3.5 miles on Dugas Road (County Road 171) to Forest Road 9650R on the left.  Park in the turnouts a few yards in.  Dugas Road is maintained dirt suitable for all vehicles.
