Dozens of eager golden retrievers and their volunteer caregivers gathered at the Arizona Biltmore on April 30 for a one-of-a-kind happy hour event where attendees could meet the pups while sipping on specialty cocktails.

Dubbed “Golden Hour with the Goldens,” the event took place from 4 to 7 p.m. at the iconic resort’s outdoor bar area. The event was a partnership between the Biltmore, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Arizona Golden Rescue, a Glendale-based nonprofit dedicated to finding forever homes for displaced golden retrievers and golden mixes.

The organization’s president, Deb Orwig, explains that they accept dogs of all ages and circumstances, including those that have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Many of the surrendered dogs are malnourished, injured or sick. Orwig and her team of volunteers ensure that each rescued dog is given a thorough veterinary exam, including updating the pup’s vaccines, microchipping, spaying or neutering and testing for valley fever and heartworm. The dog is then placed into a foster home until they are permanently placed in a loving home where they can thrive. One significant aspect of Arizona Golden Rescue is that it is a non-shelter rescue, meaning that all dogs are kept in foster homes until they are adopted.

Events like Golden Hour with the Goldens help spread funds and awareness for the rescue organization, allowing the public to interact with the dogs and learn more about the breed as well as how they can support, including fostering and adoption opportunities.

Each dog has a unique backstory and personality. Consider an elderly golden who was severely underweight and suffering from a critical case of valley fever when he came to AGR. He now has a clean bill of health and was more than happy to smile for selfies and accept a series of hearty head pats from Golden Hour attendees.

AGR is willing to accept dogs in any condition, as long as they are a golden retriever or golden mix (think goldendoodles and gollies) and are non-aggressive. While the breed is known for its gentle and affectionate temperament, tolerance of children and other pets, and extremely reliable nature, Orwig admits that acute abuse and neglect can make even the most affable pooches hostile. Luckily, it’s a very rare instance and all the dogs in their care are docile, loving and loyal – and looking for families that will reciprocate these qualities.

What pairs better with belly rubs and canine kisses than a vodka-infused “puptail”? A Tito’s rep was on hand at the event serving up special themed beverages, including The Golden (vodka, orange liqueur, lemon juice and simple syrup), Pawtio Party (vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup, rosemary and thyme), and The Loyal Labrador (vodka, ginger beer and lime juice).
