What is the overlap for patients who suffer both allergies and sinus issues? How do you help them cope with these dual maladies?

Many patients suffer from both allergies and chronic sinusitis. At our office, we’re able to test for allergies, as well as diagnose chronic sinusitis with an in-office, low-radiation CT scanner.  We also offer immunotherapy allergy shots and a minimally invasive, in-office procedure called balloon sinuplasty to treat chronic sinusitis.

Where allergies are concerned, how is care from an ENT doctor such as yourself distinct from care provided by an allergy and immunology specialist?

We offer sublingual immunotherapy, which allows patients to treat their allergies with drops at home without coming into the office for weekly shots. Along with this, we can also identify and treat any structural sinus issues that may be contributing to their symptoms.

Are allergy and sinus-disease sufferers more likely to be snorers and have sleep issues?

Yes! Nasal congestion, which is a very common symptom of both allergies and sinus disease, can cause and/or worsen snoring and sleep issues.

Do ENT docs tend to hyper-specialize within their own sphere? For instance, focus on ear problems vs. sinus health?

Yes, there are several sub-specialties within our field. There are ENTs that specialize in sinus issues, and others, called otologists, who treat ear problems. Laryngologists help with voice issues, and some ENTs practice facial plastic surgery.

Do you personally suffer from sinus/allergy issues? What are your personal protocols for dealing with them?

Since moving to Arizona 12 years ago, I have begun to suffer from seasonal allergies. Luckily, I’m only symptomatic in the spring. During that time, I’m religious about using sinus rinses, taking a daily antihistamine and nasal steroid spray.

What kind of hobbies and interests do you have outside medicine?

I spend most of my free time playing golf.

What are you watching on Netflix these days?

The last show I watched on Netflix was Squid Game.

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”

An engineer. I love solving problems and having to think outside of the box.
