Valley Coronavirus Update: 20,123 cases, 917 deaths and a roadmap for reopening schools

Coronavirus Cases Hit 20,000
The Arizona Department of Health Services reported the total COVID-19 case count in Arizona at 20,123 as of Monday, June 1; 187 of those cases were reported today, and 49.4 percent of Arizona’s total cases are located in Maricopa County.

Death Toll Rises to 917
As of Monday, June 1, 11 new deaths were reported, raising the death toll to 917. People 65 and older make up 714 of those deaths, equating to 77.9 percent.

Update from Governor Ducey: May 28, 2020
Governor Ducey held another COVID-19 update on Thursday, May 28. He confirmed that he met with school leaders around the state last week with the consensus that schools will resume at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The governor also said that he will be enacting an executive order to support Arizona schools, by “announcing a responsible plan developed by ADHS that will protect children in school-based childcare and will allow for increased childcare capacity for school-aged children.” In another update, Governor Ducey stated that organized youth activities, including summer leagues, summer schools, day camps and youth sports, are now allowed to resume.

Arizona’s Roadmap for Reopening Schools
Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman and Governor Ducey announced last week that Arizona schools will resume at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. On June 1, the Arizona Department of Education released the 41-page Roadmap for Reopening Schools which outlines guidelines and goals for schools to stay healthy and safely reopen. The guidelines include strategies for implementing physical distancing, as well as wearing face coverings and properly disinfecting surfaces, shared objects and transport vehicles.
